July 31, 2020 Solvang, California: Monty Roberts Introductory Course of Horsemanship now offers a Modular Format. The Introductory Course of Horsemanship is the first step to gaining an in-depth understanding of Monty Roberts’ concepts. The modular format is suitable for students of any age (16+), and all levels of equine experience. The instructor will pair students with horses and tasks suited to the individual’s abilities.

In the new, modular format, the course is broken up into 4 x 3-day parts which can be taken in any order.

Module 01: First Steps to Monty Roberts’ Methods

This module introduces students to Equus, the horses’ natural communication system, and how using Equus can build a willing, non-violent partnership with the horse. It also focuses on effective use of the Dually® Halter, how timing and consistency are key to improving ground- and ridden- work.

Through demonstrations, practical sessions, and classroom discussions students gain insight into the psychology and physiology of the horse, and hands-on experience to improve the relationship with horses.

Topics include:

  • How the Dually® Halter can be used to improve the relationship with our horses
  • Equus – the horses’ natural communication system, and how we can use it to build a willing, trusting partnership with our horses
  • Balance lines and driving a horse with your body
  • Fitting a bridle on a difficult horse
  • Fly spraying a sensitive horse
  • Washing your horse – the stress-free way
  • Protecting your horse – wraps, boots etc.
  • A brief introduction to Join-Up®

This module can be taken as a stand-alone tool to improve communication and relationship with horses, or as a step towards completing the Introductory Course of Horsemanship.

Module 02: Join-Up: Building A Trust-Based Partnership Through Equus

In this module students will learn to “see the world as your horse sees it.” Over 3 days they will learn the basics of Equus, the horses’ body communication system, and how it can be used to build an effective, trust-based, non-violent partnership with our horses, through Join-Up®, Monty Roberts’ world-renowned technique.

Topics include:

  • How horses learn
  • Equus – the horses’ natural communication system, and how we can use it to build a willing, trusting partnership with our horse
  • How the Dually® Halter can be used to improve the relationship with our horses
  • The Join-Up® process
  • Balance lines and driving a horse with your body

Following this, students return home to continue practicing what they have learned. By sending in videos students can continue to receive instructor’s feedback on the work. On completion of all four modules, students will receive a full study manual and further guidance on preparing for the written and practical exams, at successful completion of which, they will graduate from the Introductory Course and be eligible to take the Advanced Course.

MONTY ROBERTS AVAILABLE FOR SELECT INTERVIEWS:

The New York Times bestselling author and world-renowned horse trainer Monty Roberts is available for interviews.

MONTY ROBERTS first gained widespread fame with the release of his New York Times Best Selling book, The Man Who Listens To Horses; a chronicle of his life and development of his non-violent horse training methods called Join-Up®. Monty grew up on a working horse farm as a firsthand witness to traditional, often violent methods of horse training and breaking the spirit with an abusive hand. Rejecting that, he went on to win nine world’s championships in the show ring. Today, Monty’s goal is to share his message that “Violence is never the answer.” Roberts has been encouraged by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the award of the Membership in The Royal Victorian Order, as well as becoming Patron of Join-Up International. Other honors received were the ASPCA “Founders” award and the MSPCA George T. Angell Humanitarian Award and FEI’s Man of the Year. Monty was recently included as Horse and Hound Magazine’s Top 50 Horsemen of All Time. Monty is credited with launching the first of its kind Equus Online University; an interactive online lesson site that is the definitive learning tool for violence-free training.
