March 31, 2021 Solvang, California: Monty Roberts has spent his lifetime committed to training horses and creating champions.
When the call came that he was needed for several projects in Lexington, Kentucky, Roberts booked his flight and landed in Bluegrass Country last week. He will be assessing yearlings for owners of some of the finest Thoroughbreds in the world. And he will be catching up with old friends who are working hard to improve the race horse industry.
Staci HancockĀ and husband Arthur Hancock III raised three KentuckyĀ Derby Winners, Gato Del Sol, Sunday Silence, and Fusaichi Pegasus, on their Stone Farm in Kentucky. Staci is an original founder,Ā director and first Chairman of the Board of the KentuckyĀ Equine Humane Center andĀ aĀ founding member of Water Hay Oats Alliance, LLC, (WHOA) with a massiveĀ membership of likemindedĀ individualsĀ who support the ban on drugs in racing.Ā Staci continues her work to re-home Stone Farmās retired racehorses into secondĀ careers.
Montyās daughter, Debbie Roberts Loucks, met withĀ Jen Roytz, Executive Director of the Retired Racehorse Project, and Kristin Werner, Legal Associate for The Jockey Club, to collaborate and look for more ways to transition Thoroughbreds into new lives and careers after the race track.Ā Monty Robertsā Mustang and Transition Horse ProgramĀ launched in 2020 and has seen success as a training place for both horses needing adopting, and for interns learning the skills to help the horses become more adoptable.
By utilizing Monty Robertsā world-renowned gentle and effective training techniques including Join-Up and his patented humane gentling facility, Monty and his team at theĀ MontyĀ Roberts International Learning CenterĀ (MRILC) are gentling and starting unbacked horses from The Right Horse adoption partners and working through remedial issues with others. All of theĀ horses are desensitized to a variety of objects and stimuli ā to make them safe and willing partners for their future owners.
June will be a busy month for Monty as heĀ demonstratesĀ on June 12 at theĀ Western States Horse ExpoĀ at the Murieta Equestrian Center in Sacramento, California. Monty and his team from theĀ Monty Roberts International Learning CenterĀ will demonstrate the conceptsĀ offered year-round for students of all levels, from novices just starting out or those returning after a prolonged absence, to advanced courses for those wishing to becomeĀ future certified instructors.
Monty Roberts is entering his 32nd year of demonstrating methods of nonviolent training of horses, both in the saddle and from the ground.
