Monty Roberts Courses
“There is no such thing as teaching, only learning. No teacher can push information into an unwilling brain.” ~ Monty Roberts
Monty Roberts and his team of Certified Instructors at the Monty Roberts International Learning Center have spent the past two decades changing horse and human lives for the better teaching his globally acclaimed non-violent methods.
With a range of Monty Roberts Courses suitable for novice to advanced students, graduates of the MRILC programs have increased their effectiveness with both equine and human clients, bringing gentleness and trust to any partnership.
So whether you’d like to improve the relationship with your horses at home, or go all the way to becoming a Monty Roberts Certified Instructor, we have a course for you.

Personal Coaching by Monty Roberts
Whether live via an online chat, with a horse or without, or a phone call, Monty enjoys helping people who are seeking to overcome hurdles with their horses or create better sessions with them.
A wide range of subjects can be covered in both ground work (including foundational, advanced and remedial) and ridden work (including foundational, advanced, discipline specific and problem solving).
Monty’s Special Training
Come witness what created a re-direction in horsemanship and open your mind to a whole new perspective on your horse’s methods of communication and behavior.
Monty’s Special Training is a unique opportunity to be at Flag Is Up Farms with Monty, watching, asking questions and learning as Monty Roberts and a team of his Certified Instructors work with a range of young and remedial horses.
Gentling Wild Horses
Join~Us each summer for the experience of a lifetime! Gentle wild horses in California with Monty Roberts.
This course will give students the opportunity to use Monty Roberts’ non-violent methods with untouched (wild) horses. This course is open for everyone (at any horsemanship skill level or those completely new to horses), but ‘hands-on’ sessions will be limited to the skill set of each individual.
Horsemanship 101
Our Horsemanship 101 is perfect for those new to horses, returning after a long break or trying to overcome fear, or those who would like a brief introduction to Monty Roberts’ methods.
Now offered as a one-day course, Horsemanship 101 is also recommended for visitors and residents who would like to experience a day at Flag Is Up Farms.
Introductory Course
The Monty Roberts Introductory Course of Horsemanship is the first step to gaining an in-depth understanding of Monty Roberts’ concepts.
The course is suitable for students of any age (16+), and all levels of equine experience (your instructor will pair you with horses and tasks suited to your abilities). However, as it is a 2-week, intensive course, for those with little or no horse knowledge, we recommend prior participation in a Horsemanship 101 Clinic.
Introductory Exams
The Introductory Exams can only be taken after completion of the Monty Roberts Introductory Course of Horsemanship and sufficient home / field study.
When our Certified Instructors determine that you are ready, you will return to the Monty Roberts International Learning Center for practical and written exams, at successful completion of which, you will graduate from the Introductory Course and be eligible to take the Advanced Course.
Module 01: First Steps to Monty Roberts’ Methods
In the new, modular format, the Introductory course is broken up into 4 x 3-day parts which can be taken in any order at your convenience.
This module introduces you to Equus – the horses’ natural communication system, and how using Equus can build a willing, non-violent partnership with your horse. It also focuses on effective use of the Dually® Halter – how timing and consistency are key to improving your ground- and ridden- work.
Module 02: Join-Up: Building A Trust-Based Partnership
In the new, modular format, the Introductory course is broken up into 4 x 3-day parts which can be taken in any order at your convenience.
In this module you will learn to “see the world as your horse sees it”. Over 3 days you will learn the basics of Equus – the horses’ body communication system, and how it can be used to build an effective, trust-based, non-violent partnership with your horse, through Join-Up®, Monty Roberts’ world-renowned technique.
Module 03: Long Lining – The Benefits, Form and Fun
In the new, modular format, the Introductory course is broken up into 4 x 3-day parts which can be taken in any order at your convenience.
Effective long-lining (double line lungeing or longeing) has numerous benefits for training and conditioning horses. In this module you will learn the benefits and advantages of long-lining over single-line lunging, and the skills required to long line effectively.
Module 04: Preparation for The Introductory Exams
This module is the final prerequisite for acceptance to take the Introductory Exams and cannot be taken as a stand-alone module, or before completion of the other 3 modules.
You will recap all you have learned in modules 1 to 3, use the combined skills and knowledge learned to complete the ‘full’ Join-Up® and further explore Monty Roberts’ techniques and how they can improve your horsemanship.
Advanced Course
The Advanced Course offers students the opportunity to extend their knowledge to training both un-started and untouched horses.
This course is the next step on the pathway towards becoming a Certified Instructor and to attend the Advanced Course you must be a graduate of the Introductory Course.
Advanced Exams
The Advanced Exams can only be taken after completion of the Monty Roberts Advanced Course of Horsemanship and sufficient home / field study.
When our Certified Instructors determine that you are ready, you will return for practical and written exams, at successful completion of which, you will graduate from the Advanced Course.
