November 20, 2013 Sydney, Australia: Gai Waterhouse made history on Tuesday by becoming the first female Australian trainer to win the Melbourne Cup, the country’s most prestigious horse race.

Waterhouse saw her pre-race favorite, Fiorente, fend off competition from 2011 runner-up Red Cadeaux to win “the race that stops a nation.” http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/05/sport/melbourne-cup-fiorente-gai-waterhouse-horse-racing/

Dear Monty,

It should be I congratulating you. The time you gave me in coming to Australia, and the expertise you’ve passed on to Caroline (your certified instructor), has just worked wonders. The intuition you shared with Ryan (rider) and my barrier attendants has been invaluable. We love you being with us “down under” and hope your return to Australia is imminent.

Yesterday’s win in the Melbourne Cup was a result of a year working together as a team; getting the talented yet bullish Fiorente to accept a more user-friendly approach to training and racing.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart – for all the time and energy you gave me to help make this Cup win happen.

Fond regards,
Gai from Gai Waterhouse Racing
